November 2006

We began the month of November with service projects. Kids in both the Plainview and St. Charles GO Clubs picked up litter. In Plainview, participants helped clean up litter along the public bike trail. In St. Charles, kids picked up litter in a nearby city park.

This month we also had fun traveling down to Weaver to watch the migrating tundra swans during their stop on the Mississippi River. We counted around 150 swans and the kids had fun learning how to use the spotting scopes.

Kids in one GO Club worked on contructing a shelter from sticks and branches found on the forest floor. The kids worked together to design and build the shelter and enjoyed hiding within it to share a snack.

After Thanksgiving break, we concluded the month with some outdoor activities focused on hunting. We hiked the woods at an area park and learned how to track deer by observing footprints, scat, rubbings, broken twigs and displaced leaves on the trail. We played a game called Hunter and Deer, similar to hide and seek, to demonstrate the importance of camouflage, quietness and patience when hunting.
