December 2006

This month participants in Project Get Outdoors enjoyed a variety of outdoor activities. Broomball and field hockey are always favorites, especially when there’s some snow and ice. This winter has been unusually mild and so we’ve had to play our field hockey in the grass. But the kids have still enjoyed the games outdoors.

We had a fun event in early December where participants from both the Plainview and St. Charles Project GO clubs got together to Christmas carol for visitors to the Plainview Olde Fashioned Christmas celebration. The kids even sang a song they wrote about getting outdoors during wintertime:

“When the lake is frozen nice, Fa, la, la, la, la, la, la, la.
‘Tis the season to hit the ice, Fa, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la.
lures, leaches, worms and jigs, Fa, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la.
We catch fish with any rig, Fa, la, la, la, la, la, la, la, la…”

We had fun making our own bird feeders with pine cones, peanut butter and bird seed. The kids also enjoyed touring the local fish hatchery seeing where and how the trout are raised. Everyone was excited to watch a fish feeding demonstration and to see the large brood stock specimens. We will be eager to hit the streams this summer and try to catch some of those wary trout.
