We kicked off the month with an owling adventure. After practicing the calls of the most common owls of Se Minnesota, we explored the local graveyard that is surrounded by large white pine and cedar trees. There we took turns calling to the owls. In their journals, participants wrote poems and stories about owls and even drew pictures of their most favorite owls.

This month we played some more broomball. With no ice rink in town this year, we were forced to play in several inches of snow which added a challenge to the sport. But the kids had a blast! We also went sledding at a nearby golf course.

We visited Whitewater State Park several times this month, once to learn about local bird species and to take a winter hike and count birds. We observed lots of bluejays, juncos, cardinals, woodpeckers and nuthatches at the bird feeding station at the park.

We had another opportunity to travel down to Whitewater State Park and meet up with the MN Twins caravan doing a publicity stop in Se MN. The kids got to meet several of the professional ball players and play a few outdoor games with the athletes. There was also time for questions and autographs inside the state park visitor center.

Great outdoors fun during the cold month of December!
