This month, we had some special visitors come to Project GO to introduce the kids to butterflies, birds and fish.

A local volunteer with the Zumbro Valley Audubon Chapter and Prairie Enthusiasts came to share his experience and knowledge of monarch butterflies. Having assisted a local nature center with their trip to Mexico to observe the huge monarch migration, this volunteer was very enthusiastic about showing the kids where they can find monarchs in their own neighborhoods and how they could raise a butterfly from pupae up through it’s buttefly stage and release it.

The next week, this same volunteer returned with birding kits filled with binoculars and field guides and introduced the kids to some of the local bird species. We hiked around the local park and looked at the different birds.

Later in the month, an aquatic educator with the MinnAqua program joined us and introduced the kids to the sport of fishing. The kids played some games to learn about the fish in our area and the kinds of equipment you should have to be safe and prepared when fishing. Then we went fishing. Several of the kids caught creek chubs. And even though they didn’t catch any trout, touching worms and seeing chubs up close was quite a thrill for the kiddos!!
